While Pregnant:
If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or if you are of child baring age and engage in activities that might get you pregnant, it is advisable to exercise caution when taking any form of medications, to avoid the risk of harm to your baby. This caution should be exercised throughout your pregnancy, particularly during your first and last trimesters.
The first trimester of your pregnancy is very critical to having a healthy baby because this is the phase when all your babies’ vital organs and systems are formed. The last trimester is also very critical because the use of certain medications can cause excessive bleeding during and after delivering your baby.
If you have to take any medication while pregnant, it must be with the supervision of your doctor.
Aspirins While Pregnant:
According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), “It is especially important not to use aspirin during the last three months of pregnancy unless specifically directed to do so by a physician because it may cause problems in the unborn child or complications during delivery.”
This warming is on the California Environmental Protection Agency (CAL/EPA) Proposition 65 list of developmental toxicants (CAL/EPA Proposition 65 List). Developmental toxicants have been determined by expert scientists to be harmful to unborn babies
Aspirins While breastfeeding:
Aspirin use while breastfeeding can increase the risk of bleeding in your baby due to its blood-thinning effects. According to The American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Drugs, aspirin should be given to nursing mothers with caution because the drug has been associated with significant effects on some nursing infants.
It is also advisable not to take aspirin or aspirin containing medicines while breastfeeding, because of the risk of Reye’s syndrome. According to The National Reye’s Syndrome Foundation, “Reye’s Syndrome is a rare condition that affects the brain and liver and is most often observed in children given aspirin during a viral illness. Because sufficient information is not available to accurately determine the extent of aspirin accumulation in babies and the resulting health outcomes, the World Health Organization Working Group on Human Lactation along with the National Reye’s Syndrome Foundation considers aspirin intake by nursing mothers as unsafe”.
If you have to take any medication while breastfeeding, first consult with your doctor.
